Volkswagen Keyless Entry and Push-Button Start
Volkswagen has been around for decades and is known for their classic automobiles. There are also many popular newer models that come with features like keyless entry or the push-button start.
From the 1930s to the year 2000, Volkswagen used a simple metal key with an ability to flip. They eventually switched to keys equipped with chip technology and later to smart keys.
Keyless Entry System
The majority of modern cars utilize key fobs to enable people to open the doors and start the engine without touching the vehicle. These systems use radio frequency signals to send and receive information between the key fob, and the car. Special circuitry is employed to ensure security. Some models are more advanced than others and come with additional features like remote starters that permit the car to start only when the keyfob is within a predetermined distance.
There are many options for adding these systems to your car regardless of whether you purchase it or add them afterward. Some systems unlock only the driver's door, and others have additional features like a smartphone application that allows you lock or unlock your vehicle from anywhere. Some systems even include an alarm.

Keyless Start System
Keyless start allows you to start and enter your vehicle by pressing a single button. It's not necessary to reach in your pockets or open the door with an actual key. When the button is pressed, a unique signal from the key fob triggers the ignition to begin your car.
The system functions similarly to smart keys, which have one or more antennas placed around the vehicle that are able to detect the electronic ID of the fob as you approach it. This triggers the receiver inside the car to disable the immobilizer, then send electricity to the starter circuit to start your engine.
Once your engine is running, the system can be shut down by pressing and holding the button. The same signal is used to lock the doors, so you can exit your car and not have to be concerned about someone stealing your keys or being locked out.
G28 Car Keys come with the option of keyless entry, but many newer VWs come with it as standard. If you have an older VW that has this feature your key fob contains what's referred to as a "backup mechanical key" that can be put into an emergency port on the steering column or in the dash to get your vehicle started. For more details, refer to your owner's guide or service information.
Keys with Transponder Chips
Often known as transponder chips they are electronic microchips that are embedded into the head of your Volkswagen key. When the key is put into your ignition lock and then turned to turn, the chip transmits an electronic signal to the receiver inside your car. This signal tells the car you have the right key and allows it open the door and start the motor. The chip doesn't require any battery power to function - it receives a radio signal that is sent by the antenna ring of your car.
Prior to the 2000s, many automobiles had a basic metal key. In the early 2000s, automakers began to make use of a key-fob that had a switchblade function - when you press a button, the metal key would be released from the remote-locking device and be put into the car's ignition. This became a fad and is still in use to this day.
When you get your Volkswagen replacement keys, they'll have transponder chips that require cloning in order to match your car's system. It is a simple process that can be performed at home using a specialized key cloning machine like the KEYDIY X2 remote Cloner or another device similar. If you are having a key replaced or a new one made, make sure to bring verification of ownership, such as your driver's license and your vehicle registration.
Lost Keys
You can buy an electronic key finder that costs around $20, should you be concerned about your Volkswagen keys. These tiny devices work by sending an electronic signal to your phone whenever your keys are within reach. These devices are perfect for parking lots that have high traffic and poor lighting. They are also water-resistant and can help you locate your car in case it is stolen.
However, the best way to ensure that you do not lose your VW keys is to make sure they are always stored in one location, such as a hook by the front door or in your pocket. If you prefer, you can get a new key cut at locksmith. In the majority of instances, this will be cheaper than buying new keys from the dealer.
If your Volkswagen is equipped with chip keys, you may be able to request a replacement from the dealer if the key is damaged or lost. You'll need your registration or title along with proof of ownership with you when you visit the dealership. The dealer will order an entirely new Volkswagen key. You'll need to return your vehicle to the dealer to get the key programmed. You could also contact the services of a locksmith, who should be able provide keys based on the VIN.
